Visco Elastic Foam Mattress Review

The visco elastic foam mattress (also referred to as a memory foam mattress) is supposed to be the highest quality pressure reliever among all mattresses. Visco elastic, or memory, foam reacts to heat and weight to mold to the sleeper’s body within moments. Visco elastic foam mattresses can prevent body sores and general discomfort during sleep. The mattress supports your whole body. Pressure is distributed your entire length, not only to your shoulders, hips, and knees.

How does it work? The visco elastic foam is built in from dozens of “open cells,” similar to air pockets. When pressure and heat are applied, air moves from one cell to another, allowing the mattress to adjust to the curvature of your body while supporting it all equally. A higher density visco foam means more air pockets, slower resistance to heat and pressure, and better quality. A higher density foam will feel firmer, but actually mold better and offer better support.

A visco elastic memory foam mattress topper or pad allows you to add the memory foam feature to traditional mattresses that you already own. The main difference between using a topper and a full visco elastic foam mattress is that the mattress has more volume for more cells; greater durability and comfort. A high density topper may serve well enough, however.

If you scan a visco elastic memory foam mattress review, you’ll notice a few common questions or complaints. A common murmur is that visco elastic foam makes the sleeper hot at night. Low quality foam doesn’t “breathe” and may have such an effect. In higher quality foam, manufacturers can include “air channels” without compromising density, which provides sufficient air circulation for most customers. Other consumers complain that the mattresses don’t offer the advertised support. It is important to investigate what density mattress is appropriate for every individual sleeper. Lighter people can use lower density mattresses, while heavier people may need higher density foam. Another consideration is sleeping position. A back or side sleeper needs a different mattress than a stomach sleeper.  Also, warranties apply to mattress durability, not comfort. The latter is too subjective for manufacturers to guarantee.

Aside from the obvious comfort benefit, memory foam mattresses correlate with more REM sleep (deep sleep) as well as less tossing and turning. They may help sleepers with allergies, too. Memory foam is hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant. People with poor circulation, fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis are also supposed to benefit from visco elastic foam.
