About That Unfinished Furniture
Unfinished furniture has become a huge business. Especially when selecting individual pieces of furniture (as opposed to full sets), people have realized the tremendous advantage and enjoyment of finishing furniture themselves. Some prefer natural wood finishes, others colored stains, and still others want to paint that furniture to the rainbow of their own liking. Whatever the case, buying unfinished wood furniture allows you to complete the décor of you home with total individuality. This is a dream for the control freaks out there, don’t you think?
There are different types of wood and different types of furniture. Let’s do a short “about” section. For the common woods available:

Unfinished oak furniture: Since red and classic white oak are the most abundant in the U.S., they are very commonly used here…and have an illustrious history in furniture use from the 1500’s onwards. It is hard, stiff, durable, holds nails and screws well, it is attractive, and shock resistant. White oak ranges from nearly white to a gray/brown heartwood. How the logs are sawn changes the appearance of the grain. Their light color stains beautifully with all finishes.
Unfinished pine furniture: There are a few different “colors” of pine, from whitish yellow to yellow to cream. Pine is easy to shape, carve, and nail or glue together. It stains well, though sometimes a sealer will help attain a more even appearance.
Other woods like cherry are beautiful even without a finish at all. Maple, aspen, and cedar are also beautiful choices for finishing. Cedar and oak are especially great for outdoors furniture.
Any of the abovementioned woods are beautiful as for the bedroom, kitchen, or single pieces in the office, study, living, or even dining room. Unfinished bedroom furniture, especially for the children, is an especially great opportunity for letting children be involved in creating their own space, as well as seeing their parents put in real effort for their kids. Definitely a quality investment! For the new addition to the family, unfinished baby furniture means that you get to personalize the pieces from day one! Painting names and patterns are an adorable way to liven up a baby’s room.
Pieces of unfinished kitchen furniture, as well as for other communal rooms, can add a special character and uniqueness to the space. Painting and finishing it yourself, or hiring for a professional finishing job, the rooms will come alive with that personalized touch.
