When you’re remodeling an old kitchen, the kitchen sink is probably one of the first things that has “just got to go.”  Kitchen sinks are just like that.  Choosing a new one, however, can be an ordeal.  Here’s a run down of what you might be looking at in that kitchen warehouse.

Stainless steel kitchen sinks:  Stainless steel has a sterile and modern look.  These sinks have some desirable qualities; they shine beautifully, and will never break.  “Stainless” is not an absolute, however, and scratching can occur as well.  Both of these are repairable, just not with a kitchen sponge.  Remember to ask about sound deadening on the sink’s underside (otherwise the steel echoes loudly) and thicker gauge steel.

Ceramic kitchen sinks:  The ceramic kitchen sink is also easy to polish, since they have such a smooth surface.  Ceramic won’t scratch and is heat resistant.  They can fire embossed to make designs, be thrown by hand, or made of porcelain china.  Ceramic is especially beautiful as a decorative centerpiece to a contemporary kitchen.

Granite kitchen sinks:  Also heat resistant, and proof against scratching, chipping, or staining.  Granite is highly durable and easy to maintain, but not available in a shiny finish like ceramic.  Keep in mind that granite is pricey!

Undermount kitchen sinks:  Sleek and beautiful, with no extra lines and no water pooling on the counters.  Perfect for stone and granite countertops; just get an experienced installer!

Corner kitchen sink:  Great for small, L, or U shaped kitchens.  In the corner, the sink is easily accessible and doesn’t swallow space.  Any kitchen will benefit from the pile of dishes hiding in the corner instead of taking the center position.

Apron front kitchen sink:  With lots of character, this deep bowled sink has a front lip surrounding the countertop; water drips onto the floor without ruining cabinetry.  It’s a “rustic farmhouse” style and will bring your kitchen a beautiful 19^th century look.

After deciding what your sink should be made from, and how it will lay in your kitchen, the biggest design decision will be in choosing the right kitchen sink faucet. Whether it will swivel or be stationary, be wall mounted or installed in the countertop, the color, style, height and knobs are all factors that you will want to weigh and take into account in making your decision.  You’ll also need to have everything installed properly. Make sure you do a good job of researching kitchen sink plumbing services, as an error in this area could be not just a costly one, but a veritable nightmare if you end up having flooding due to poor intallation.

Kohler kitchen sinks, Franke kitchen sinks, and Elkay kitchen sinks all have a great name.  Blanco kitchen sinks are also high up there.  Speak to a salesperson and installation expert to make that hook and sinker decision!
