Karastan’s Beginnings
The very first Karastan Rug dealer was Wanamaker’s New York department store, which introduced the brand in 1928. It was in North Carolina in the 1920’s, Marshall Field & Co. created the new product: fine machine-made Oriental style rugs. The prices were reasonable. Soon, everyone wanted one. Karastan Rug dealers have been multiplying ever since.
The manufacturers first started broadloom carpet production in the following decade. Plain velvet and twist styles were made initially.

In 1948, the company introduced its Kara-loc weaving process, turning out designs in many colors. It also began using the cut-and-loop method ahead of the rest of the industry. These made stylish carpets in at affordable prices possible. The brand became a byword. Soon, Karastan carpet and rug dealers were much sought after by interior decorators of the time. These dealers ushered in a new era of plush comfort in American households.
The new manufacturing process awed the trade press of the time. These products became known as “Mystery Rugs.” For the 1933-34 Chicago World’s Fair, Karastan created a large version of its Kirman pattern. They sought to demystify the Karastan rug. Then, the world began walking on a Karastan.
More than five million visitors walked, left stains and spills on that rug. Visitors to the company headquarters will still find that rug today. One half is dirty. Beside it is the other half, cleaned, as if professionally restored of all the dirt from the World’s Fair.
At the New York World’s Trade Fair of 1939-40, nine million pairs of feet subjected another Karastan carpet to the same torture test. The rug was cleaned, made like brand-new again. The Karastan brand became known for “The Wonder Rugs of America.” As it’s popularity and brand awareness increased, the demand for these rugs and carpets increased. With the addition of one new Karastan carpet dealer after another, new outlets opened rapidly.
