Sewing Your Own Quilt Covers

Even though the majority of us buy our quilt sets from the department store, quilt covers are very easy to make. Sewing your own quilt covers can be inspiring and fulfilling. You can pour all your emotions into making it and you may also consider giving it as a gift for someone you really care about.

Having enough time and patience are the keys to successfully sewing your own quilt. Here are 4 easy steps that you can follow:

Start with gathering your supplies. From your fabrics to your sewing machine, have everything ready and place them all together in one place. This will make sewing faster. If you wish to sew by hand, make sure that your thumb protector is with you. This may come in handy at times. If you have a design or image that would like to follow, have them ready at your side too.

Choose a size, a queen size quilt cover for example, and cut your fabric into your desired size. Fabrics of good quality are easy to cut since the threads are well balanced. Try to give allowances to the sides so that you have some spare room when sewing. Make sure that you have two flat sheets ready to be joined together. It is best if the fabric colors match as they will make your quilt cover look more traditional, but it is not essential.

For the two fabrics to be joined together, spread the fabrics on the floor with their right sides aligned. Now, what you want to do is sew them together. If you are using a sewing machine, pick up the aligned side and run it on the machine. Be careful of the alignment; try to use the slower setting of the machine. If you’re sewing by hand, then all you have to do is get your needle and thread and sew the aligned side. You need to do this on 3 sides. On the 4th side, you should install a zipper to have a proper closure mechanism. Doing this also provides easy access for cleaning the quilt and cover in the future.

Take this time to check for any problems and trim excess thread from the cover. You can also choose to give it a wash before using it. It is then a simple process of turning the quilt cover the right way and inserting your quilt (comforter) into the cover. Then you can stand back and admire your creation!

By following the mentioned steps above, you will be able to successfully made your own quilt cover. If you want to make it into a more personalized quilt cover, you can weave label and letters on it. Sewing your own quilt cover is a really fun and productive activity which anyone can enjoy.
