Before You Buy An Electric Sewing Machine
a guest post by Melissa Brenner
First of all, if you are thinking about taking up sewing as a hobby, it’s important to cast aside any images you may have of malnourished, overworked Victorian mothers of twelve children operating multiple sewing machines at once. The modern electric sewing machine makes things a whole lot easier and it no longer takes a huge amount of skill to operate one effectively, though it is still desirable that you are a creative person or else even the best sewing machines will be wasted on you.
While you might think that sewing a specialized hobby, you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to get started. You’ll find that electric sewing machines are sold in most department store, but you will likely find the best prices online. You also should take the time to become acquainted with the whole world of sewing before you even consider buying a machine. It’s a good idea to try it out on a friend’s machine first, or to take a sewing course to start learning before you buy your own.

This is important because you don’t want to end up ordering some industrial sized behemoth in an online craft auction when all you want is a simple electric sewing machine to create patterns using a few basic types of stitch. These giant sewing machines are unlikely to even fit in your room comfortably anyway plus their cost is prohibitive. You could be in for a nasty surprise if you buy a machine and find that it doesn’t work properly without a particular item which the shop doesn’t sell.
It is vital that you get a manual with your purchase as sewing machines for beginners are complicated beasts and unknown territory. Spending an hour reading the instructions of the latest Singer model could save you hours of frustration trying to figure out certain aspects. Not only that, but you could also accidentally damage the machine before you even get to use it correctly. With this in mind, only ever buy sewing machines that have reasonable warranties from companies that will actually send around a professional to fix it. Under no circumstances must you attempt to fix it yourself because unskilled hands could make things a lot worse, not to mention the physical harm that can come to you.
None of this should put you off though as sewing is a wonderful hobby to get into. There is something intensely rewarding about being able to repair and possibly create your own clothes. This ability will guarantee that you will have your own unique style when it comes to fashion.
