Do You Have An Earthquake Kit For Your Family?
a guest post by Ferdinand Hunting
Chances are, even if you live in an Earthquake prone area, you haven’t heard of earthquake kits. That’s not surprising because many people haven’t. But you and your family’s life could depend on whether or not you have one or more earthquake kits at the ready if the ‘big one’ ever hits. Sadly, like with most natural disasters, many people believe it won’t happen to them or think they will wait a while before getting prepared. It’s these people you see on TV after a natural disaster hits crying to the world (if they’re still alive) how they were unprepared and how the event took them by surprise. You don’t have to be one of these victims if an event happens to you.
An earthquake kit can be a very simple and easy to put together kit or it can be a commercially purchase kit that has everything under the sun in it. I recommend you start off small and build your kit from the ground up. If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, then there are many places where you can buy a ready made kit for you and your family. Either way, I suggest getting started today. Don’t put it off! Earthquakes don’t have a ‘season’, they can strike at any time.
To start you own earthquake kit, you’ll want to begin with the basics. This would be at least a 3 day supply of water. You can find 3 to 5 gallon water containers at the Camping section of many retailers, including Wal-Mart. For my family, I estimate 2 gallons of water per day per person. So the 3 of us would need 2-3 gallon containers. But I always put back more. I plan for at least a week and have 5-5 gallon containers of water put back and I rotate them out every 6 months.
Other things that should go into an earthquake preparedness kit are at least 3 days of food. Again, about any Camping section of a large retailer will have freeze-dried camping food. Who knows, you may even like it! First aid kits, flashlights, lanterns, batteries, AM/FM Radio, extra clothing and personal medication are all things that need to be put in your kit. Also, don’t forget about your pets. You’ll need food and water for them as well!
