Deciding On A DVD Storage Cabinet

If your family is like most, someone’s always watching a movie. Everyone has their favorite DVDs, and in a big family that can add up to an awful lot of discs floating around the house. Organization is a must, but you need a solution that will hold a sizable and ever-increasing collection. Enter the DVD storage cabinet.

DVD storage cabinets are a more elegant alternative to the typical DVD towers or bookcases. Instead of open shelves, your DVDs are kept behind doors, which looks a lot nicer in a stylish living room. There’s another benefit to having those DVDs behind doors, and that is that they are kept away from little (and sometimes destructive) hands. So if you have a toddler in your house, a locking DVD storage cabinet might just be the perfect thing.

Before even thinking about styles (and there are plenty of choices there), think about what you will want to keep inside. Will this just be for DVDs? If you would like to have shelves that are the right height for CDs then a CD and DVD storage cabinet with a variety of shelf heights might be a better choice for you.

The next thing to consider is style. The most common and inexpensive models on the market are variations on the black DVD storage cabinet theme. These will work well in just about any living room, especially if you keep it next to the TV, which is also black, and a pretty convenient location to boot.

If you’re looking for something more elegant, then a wooden DVD storage cabinet might better suit you. You don’t necessarily have to pay a lot for a wood look. Options like MDF or pressboard will be less costly than a solid wood DVD storage cabinet, but they won’t necessarily stand up as well over the years. Since this is a more functional piece of furniture you will probably want to have it blend in rather than stand out. So if the rest of your furniture is oak, try to find an oak DVD storage cabinet. If most of your living room furniture is cherry, try to find one that’s made from cherry wood.

Next to consider is the door style. You can choose from solid doors, or clear or frosted glass. In an elegant living room, you won’t want to see your DVD collection, so skip the glass altogether. If you have a more trendy look to your home, then clear glass doors can be a great option. They can look especially good next to some open-door bookcase furniture. Frosted glass is the middle of the road option. If you’re not sure that you want to have your entire DVD collection on display 24/7 or you’re a frosted glass fan like me, then a DVD media storage cabinet with frosted glass doors is the perfect choice.

Sometimes its hard to find what you’re looking for, even with the wide selection available in stores and online. If you can find one that’s perfect for you, consider getting your hands on some DVD storage cabinet plans, and making one yourself. This way, you’ll be sure to end up with the right home for your DVDs, and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you built it yourself.

With most video and audio media being relesed on disk media, a cabinet is becoming a requirement to store the growing collection for many. This article effectively points out the great variety available. The DVD/CD storage cabinet can indeed be one of the show pieces of furniture for your den or living room. Shop around before you buy, there are probably more styles than you ever imagined.
