by Harriett Greenstein

Have you ever eaten a bad chocolate chip cookie?  Many sweet treats are always delicious, but it is actually very easy to destroy a perfectly good recipe.  While it may seem easy to bake tasty cookies, if you don’t bake a lot, there are some tips you need to remember.  Whether your baking your favorite chocolate chip cookies or you’re trying a new recipe, keep this ideas in mind to avoid bad cookies.

Part of the biggest outcome of your cookies comes from the dough.  If you mess up the dough, your cookies are doomed.  Unfortunately, there are many ways to mess up the dough.  The good thing is that simply by following the recipe closely, you can avoid many of these mistakes.  That means reading the ingredients list and instructions in full before you start.  You should do this before you get the ingredients too so that you don’t get the wrong ingredients or make the wrong substitutes.

Don’t skip around in the instructions and don’t make substitutions unless you know they are correct.  Better yet, don’t make substitutions period because it rarely comes out as good.  If the instructions say to sift the flour, sift the flour.  If it says to mix the butter and sugar and then add the eggs, don’t mix the eggs and flour and then try to mix in the sugar and butter.  It won’t come out the same.  Most recipes are fairly easy to follow, and if it’s not, you can always find a better recipe.  Follow what it says.

When it comes to cookies, how you bake them has a big effect on the outcome.  Make sure the oven is completely preheated.  Do not put the cookie dough on a warm or hot pan.  Make sure it is room temperature.  Watch the cookies carefully.  If you overcook them, even if they’re not burnt, they will be hard and crunchy.  Follow these simple tips and you can have great cookie results.
