So what should you consider when shopping for dressing tables? Well first of all you will have to decide whether to go with the Single pedestal, double pedestal or console style dressing table. These are the three distinct styles around which all dressing tables are based. In an ideal world you should choose the double pedestal dressing table over the other two. However the world is rarely ideal and often space and cost will mean that the double pedestal dressing table is impractical. While they are without a doubt the most impressive style, they are usually the largest and most expensive option.

An ideal compromise then is the single pedestal dressing table, these are not as big as the double pedestal counterpart but with the single set of drawers or a cupboard down either the left or right hand side they should still offer enough storage space to accommodate all your cosmetic needs. The console table is the smallest of the 3 options and is more like a desk than a dressing table, with no side column it provides storage space via 2 or 3 drawers positioned along the length of the table top. This is the recommended choice where cost and space are at a premium.

Once you have decided on the style the next thing to consider should be the material. Do you want a solid wood dressing table? Pine, oak or ash are great materials for your dressing table and where possible you should consider this option over plywood and chipboard. Real wood may be more expensive, but you should consider a real oak, ash, or pine dressing table to be an investment. If you look after it it is unlikely to depreciate in value and could even be passed onto your children as an heirloom.

The choice of wood is of course a very personal one and will boil down to your own taste at the end of the day, as is the decision to go with painted or unpainted. Sometimes you need to do things on your own if you want to get them done properly, so the best thing is to just do it yourself.

Fortunately, a mosaic makeup vanity can be made at home and is fairly easy project even if you’ve never done such a thing before. You’ll have a piece of furniture that is just what you wanted; one that is beautiful, one-of-a-kind, and a work of art you’ll be proud to show off.

It’s easy to find the materials needed to get the results you want. Try to pick a white make up vanity set so that you don’t ruin a hardwood surface if everything goes wrong. They also cost a little less than the other types. You also need something you can use as tiles. Old tinted glasses, plates you don’t mind breaking work well, but you can purchase geometric shaped ceramic tiles in any hardware store. Make up vanities look good with a colorful mix of tiles, but you can use one single tone as well. You can create intricate designs with the tiles for a more sophisticated look. You can get stencils for these if you’d like, or just go freehand.

Besides the tiles, you also need to have some adhesive, which will be used to keep the tiles in place until you add the grout. Grout is a material used to hold bricks or tiles together. It comes in black, white, beige, and other colors, so make a choice that compliments the tiles and design you have in mind. It’s also used to seal the hole between elements, like your pieces of mosaic.

Get the tiles you want to use. Break the glasses and plates in a padded bag. Always wear safety gloves and goggles to protect yourself from the little shrapnel that can cut the bag from inside. Pick the flattest pieces as they work the best on any flat surface. Think about a design you can live with, and arrange the little pieces so that they compose an aesthetically pleasing formation. You may want to make your design out of bought geometric tiles that are clean cut and use the irregular broken ones as a border.

When you’re satisfied with the result, glue the pieces to the clean surface, and wait until the adhesive starts to do its job. Mix the grout with some water, and fill the gaps between the edges. Don’t care if it gets on the tiles just yet, you can even smear it in a 1/2 inch thick layer so that it covers everything. The most important thing is to fill the holes.

Once it’s dried, which would happen in ten to twelve hours, you can use a wet sponge to clean the surface. Use a hard, dense one that can tear off the excess dried grout easily. Make sure that the surface is clean and there are no white spots left on the tiles. You can apply a layer of lacquer to protect it from metal objects, scratches and dents. An alternative is to have a piece of glass cut to fit the top of your vanity, giving you a smooth surface to work on, and protecting your work from damage.

It’s that simple, and it doesn’t need to be applied to an expensive antique make up vanity either. Mosaics do look good on intricately crafted old furniture, but the price of those pieces is usually too high to modify them in any way. Have fun, come up with a design that you think would be an asset to your room, and you’ll have a stunning vanity that will be a real personal oasis that you can enjoy starting your day with for years to come.

The other day I passed by an enticing flea market. Too enticing to resist, actually. The booths and sections that always catch my eye are, of course, those selling furniture and homewares. On this particular day, a number of sellers had brought in dozens of delightful pieces intertwined with a vanity bench set theme. Benches and stools, mirrors and tables, all very delicate, very feminine, and very beautiful.

Seeing vanity stools and benches out of their typical context gave my imaginative mind some room to breathe. These exquisite pieces of furniture did not have to be relegated to a private bathroom, or even bedroom. Most of them would do wonderfully in an elegant entryway, perhaps framed by potted plants. Some seemed like they’d been built for a small patio or balcony area. Others could simply have been decorative pieces in the living and dining room corners.

Makeup vanity benches, I realized, are more versatile then we tend to think. They are such unique pieces. They are so delicately constructed. A quality vanity and bench set is really a piece of art. Why should it be shuttered off into a private room, when, in many cases, it can sit, gloriously appreciated, in a central place of the home? Vanity tables might double as a quaint desk, or even as buffet furniture. Vanity mirrors can be hung over a table or even over a delicate bench. Perhaps it is time to take these beautiful pieces of furniture out. Bring the fairytale and the romance into the home.

Don’t think you have to go with traditional furniture to take advantage of the romantic mood. While antiques look out of place in many contemporary settings, a modern make up vanity paired with a single red rose will give you all the ambiance you could want, and without sacrificing on the look you’ve already achieved.

A mirrored makeup vanity is ideal. Like the antiques, however, these makeup vanity sets are usually bulkier and heavier. For small apartments or those up many flights, delivery may or may not be possible.
