Wonderful Writing Desks

I am a writer and know the importance of having a good, comfortable place to write. Some people prefer to write while lying down in bed while others prefer to write at the kitchen table. I prefer to write at a desk. Writing at a desk allows me to be comfortable and alert. It also allows me to be able to have everything I need within arms reach and I can place it wherever I want which means I can choose to have it out in the open where other household members are going on with their daily lives or I can have it in a separate room that is peaceful and quiet and away from the chaos. Lately I have been choosing the latter, I get more done when there are no distraction to take me away from what I am doing.

Desks are great for writers but you do not need to be a writer to reap the benefits of having one at your disposal. A desk with drawers is a great storage area for your stationary and other items. If you read or write in a journal or do any sort of work at home, it is much more comfortable to be able to do these things at a desk. Children also benefit as they can do their homework in a ergonomically friendly environment and this will get them in the habit of taking care of their backs and wrists from the effects of working in non-ergonomically comfortable positions.

There are many different types of desks available on the market. You can choose between new ones that can be bought at department stores and furniture stores or you can buy an antique that are found in thrift stores and through antique dealers. Desks are available in many materials, designs, sizes and colors. By far, the most popular desk is the wood writing desk. Wood lasts longer, looks great and is easy to take care of. Wood matches the interior of any home. Most people think of wood as being more expensive than other materials and although that may be true in some cases, it is very possible to get a wood desk for fairly cheap.

Do a lot of research online at sites like the Writing Desk Specialist and have a look in stores in your area. Compare prices before you buy and eventually, you will find a great deal on a desk that will suit all of your and your family’s needs!

Leather Furniture: Care And Maintenance

Many people adore leather furniture for its beauty, character, and comfort. Since real leather is from cow hide, every piece has is entirely unique. The “grain” and finish will be individual to your home. Puncture and tear resistant, as well. It is potentially a very durable, long living material. If you take proper care of it, that is.

Maintenance of and cleaning leather furniture is not difficult. Nor does it require a major investment of time or money. And the years of useful, beautiful life that you will add to your pieces, even the cheap leather furniture, make every bit of effort well worth your while.

The first thing you need to know is where to put your pieces. Or rather, where not to put them. Leather can slowly begin to harden and eventually crack from exposure to direct or continuous sunlight. That means you do not want to set that leather sofa furniture underneath a sunny bay window. Design your space so that you can comfortably place any and all of your leather living room furniture out of sunlight’s glare. Usually, you still have three walls to choose from, so this shouldn’t be too difficult.

Leather FurnitureNext, remember to always clean up spills immediately. That refers to every piece in every room. Your leather bedroom furniture, bar and kitchen pieces, and dining room chairs: when water spills, wipe it up. When soda or juice spills, get that sticky stuff immediately! You can wipe with a mildly damp cloth, but dry your leather pronto. Moisture left on leather will also cause cracking and tearing. Brushing off crumbs before they are allowed to burrow themselves in is also sound advice. Don’t let oils and dirt get embedded. Some people really like black leather furniture because even if pen or other markings occur, they are virtually unnoticeable.

Finally, you will periodically have to clean and condition your pieces. About once each year, you should move apart that leather sectional furniture, bring all your bar stools and dining chairs into one room, and clean the leather with a mild pH balanced leather cleaner, and then use a conditioner specially made for leather. Neither are very expensive. Both are worth their cost.

All quality leather furniture stores should be able to provide you with this information, and more, to ensure that your leather will look and feel the best it can for years and years to come. They will have advice specific to the pieces that you buy, be it a full leather lounge, or an individual item. They will most likely also make offers to sell you their cleaning and conditioning products. Feel free to buy from them or from another retailer: just buy the best!

The Settee: From 17th Century Till Today

Decorative furniture is wonderful for its beauty and function. You get to raise your home’s level of style and class, while simultaneously bringing in pieces of furniture that can actually be sat in, lounged on, or the like. The upholstered settee is one such elegant example.

Settee furniture is actually a fancy phrase for sofa, and can be used in such general terms, but most people refer to specific style of sofa dating back to the seventeenth century in Europe. They are designed to accommodate two or more people, often in a reclining position. Over the centuries interior designers came to include matching chairs, as well. The seats of settees are always upholstered, while the back and arms may or may not be. Different versions of settee sofas have come into popularity, like the chaise lounge and chesterfield. Each have a particular character. Some look particularly old century, others are more contemporary.

SetteeThe original French settee is of delicate and intricate design. A wooden frame and fully upholstered, the style is lightly stuffed. The upholstery fabric often has delicate patterns, sometimes is textured, as well. The frame often has arches and special carvings. The arms are short, not quite reaching the front edge of the seat. A Victorian settee is similar in basic design, but even more dramatic. For example, the arches are steeper, or even progress into more intricate shapes. Even more dramatic fabrics are used for the upholstery. If you are searching out for a true antique settee, these are the designs you will be looking at.

In deep contrast, a modern leather settee will have sleek lines. Usually, it is upholstered in overstuffed leather and the metal frame is barely noticeable. Any style of throw pillow or shag pillow can be tossed onto modern leather settees to create a real contemporary “lounge” look. They are for getting comfortable.

Both antique and contemporary styles can be built for different spaces. Some are more appropriate in halls or entryways. Others offer so much reclining space that they look best in the bedroom. A small corner settee is a prime example of living room decorative furniture. Constructed to fit neatly into the corner (true to its name), these settees provide extra decorative seating. Usually, you’ll want other chairs and even sofas in addition to the corner piece.

Take advantage of settee cushions, as well. Especially if your settee is only lightly stuffed, a few elegant or designer throw pillows will go far to create a more comfortable and welcoming environment. Only in hall settee, perhaps, would you shy away from extra cushioning; those pieces are truly decorative, and not often for actual lounging. Of course, that’s all up to your discretion.

How to Avoid Breaking Your Mirrored Furniture

The common old wife’s tale goes: if you break a mirror you will have 7 years bad luck. Superstitious people live their lives around sayings like that and will avoid breaking mirrors at all cost. If you are one of those people you probably don’t own many pieces of mirrored furniture but if you do, you want to try your best not to break it in anyway.

When we say “break” we don’t mean scratch, crack, or chip. If your dainty antique mirrored furniture is suffering from any of those ailments all you need to do is patch it up like you would the windshield of your car. You can purchase glass sealant and a treatment chemical at any home supplies store or hardware store. If the crack is so severe that a little bit of touchup won’t do you might need to have the silver redone. You can take it to a glasscutter for that or you can just have the mirror replaced.

Replacing a broken mirror can be an expensive venture. The bigger your mirror is the more money you are going to have to shell out to get it replaced. It is a much better idea to avoid shattering your mirrored furniture in the first place.

Here are three simple rules you can follow to avoid harming your mirrors:

Pay Extra for Shipping and Handling:

You can buy tons of great mirrored bedroom furniture online these days but when you do so you run the risk of the mirrors breaking during transit. To avoid having an inexperienced bumbling trucker damage your brand new piece of mirrored furniture you can opt to purchase insurance on the piece or pay a little bit extra for shipping and handling.

Keep Away from Children:

Small children love to horse play and whenever they do they somehow manage to break something. If you want to keep your mirrored furniture out of harms way you should put it in a room that isn’t often trafficked by small children. By keeping children away from the mirrors you will keep them safe from injury and the mirrors safe from harm.

Avoid Moving It Around:

Moving your furniture to a new location is the number one way to break it. Once you set the furniture down you should keep it where it is. If you have to move it make sure to cover it with soft and heavy fabrics so that if you bump it you won’t break it.

Antique Makeup Vanities: For Boudoir, Bedroom and Bath

What we know today as antique makeup vanities had their beginnings in the 18th century.  It was a time when fops came on the scene.  So these vanity, mirror, and bench sets were accoutrements used by gentlemen.  It was only a little later when the ladies caught on.  Now, when the ladies want to doll themselves up and look pretty, this is the furniture just for that purpose.  Of course, men still use them too.

In today’s antique markets, the best examples of a genuine antique makeup vanity are French 18th century period pieces.  They are known as elaborate, handmade pieces, richly carved out of the best woods. Oak, cherry, maple, and mahogany were popular choices.  Artisans inlaid them with ivory or mother-of-pearl. These woods last longer than wood employed for mechanized furniture making in our time.

Authentic Antiques

antique makeup vanitiesIf you’re looking for genuine antiques, they’re sure to have a hefty price tag. But many furniture makers today make modern reproductions of these styles.  They use the same woods, designs, fabrication methods and finishes. These vanities are updated with new original designs, built-in lights and additional storage areas.

By definition, antique vanities, the real ones can also come from other historical periods. Furniture, including some vanities from 1876, when the U.S. celebrated its centennial have patriotic motifs on them. The cylindrical foot on an antique vanity is the elongated bulb foot that’s found on 18th and early 19th century furniture. The trumpet leg was a feature of the furniture style typical of the mid-17th and early 18th century.  Finding a vanity with these legs would make it a very valuable antique. One very unique antique vanity is the Japanese kyodai, a mirrored dressing stand, used by coiffed geisha in kimono way back in the 1600s.

Antique Bedroom Vanities

As they age, these antiques appreciate in value.  For your teenager’s bedroom, browse among the many antique bedroom vanity collections. They’re an invaluable coming of age gift for a young lady. This depends, of course, on the rest of her room décor.  But with such a beautiful and precious centerpiece, you’d want to make the whole room over.

Antique Bath Vanities

Antique bathroom vanities add an aesthetic touch to that room.  Find an antique bathroom vanity with a wide enough marble countertop. An antique white bathroom vanity would look less heavy than its equivalent with darker finishes.  An antique bath vanity with a darker finish would add old-world charm to a lighter-colored bathroom.
Buying a furniture piece for the home is never a casual enterprise.  You’ll spend hours online, with antique suppliers, in flea markets, looking for that antique make-up vanity that looks just right.  When you finally find one, you’ll know it was worth all the time it took to find one.

Modern Furniture: How to Make It Work in Your Home

The origins of modern furniture date back as early as Roman times!

Not particularly modern you might think, but it is the philosophy of the modern approach to design that marks it out rather than any particular date.

Modern design furniture developed from the emerging new approaches to architecture and design of the early 19th Century. The designers of this era were influenced not by the stuffy Victorian interiors of their parent generation, full of useless knick-knacks and heavy dark overly-ornate furnishing. Instead, they were inspired by the cultural influence of far flung countries that, at the time were the colonies of old Europe.

So what did regions like Africa, Asia and the Far East have to teach the makers of modern furniture? Simply the twin principles of form and function that are the blueprint of modern design furniture.

What makes a good piece of modern furniture?

Clean lines, simplicity and the ability to perform an obvious function are the ground rules for deciding whether modern furniture is simply a piece of clever kitsch or a true design classic.

How to choose what to buy.

First, research your subject well. Check on the internet and in interiors magazines to get an idea of the sort of modern furniture you like. Do you like bold colours and prints or muted tones? Do you like wood or steel and plastics? Or perhaps you like the retro-modern look of the 50′s and 60′s? You will be able to mix and match these styles but it’s a good idea to find out what themes appeal to you.

Second, know your needs. Let’s use modern bedroom furniture as an example. Make sure you know how much space you have to fill and what size your furniture needs to be. Too big a wardrobe for instance will swamp the room. Too small a wardrobe and you’ll need yet more furniture to house your clothes. If you have time it’s good to shop around and not let yourself fall in love with furniture that isn’t fit for its purpose.

If it does the job you want it to do, you won’t need to replace it for many years to come. So it’s worth getting it right.

Third, be ruthless about the principles of form and function. It’s difficult, but resist the urge to start filling your hard-won spacious interior with smart modern knick knacks. It detracts from the beauty and functionality of the furniture. If it’s pointless, leave it out.

Follow these two principles and you can’t go wrong. As long as your choice serves its purpose and has a clean simple beauty then you have a winner. The key is to let the beauty of your furniture speak for itself. It should need no adornments to look stunning, just space to let the quality of the design shine through.

A Guide to Choosing the Right Dressing Table

The dressing table has been around one one guise or another since the French invented them in the 17th Century. Back then of course, they bore little resemblance to the modern mirrored dressing table set that is so popular today, and were in fact little more than wash basin suspended between 2 pieces of wood; often mounted on wheels for greater maneuverability. Today of course, it is a different story and you can choose from a whole host different styles, colors and materials when choosing the perfect makeup vanity/dressing table for your room.

So what should you consider when shopping for dressing tables? Well first of all you will have to decide whether to go with the Single pedestal, double pedestal or console style dressing table. These are the three distinct styles around which all dressing tables are based. In an ideal world you should choose the double pedestal dressing table over the other two. However the world is rarely ideal and often space and cost will mean that the double pedestal dressing table is impractical. While they are without a doubt the most impressive style, they are usually the largest and most expensive option.

An ideal compromise then is the single pedestal dressing table, these are not as big as the double pedestal counterpart but with the single set of drawers or a cupboard down either the left or right hand side they should still offer enough storage space to accommodate all your cosmetic needs. The console table is the smallest of the 3 options and is more like a desk than a dressing table, with no side column it provides storage space via 2 or 3 drawers positioned along the length of the table top. This is the recommended choice where cost and space are at a premium.

Once you have decided on the style the next thing to consider should be the material. Do you want a solid wood dressing table? Pine, oak or ash are great materials for your dressing table and where possible you should consider this option over plywood and chipboard. Real wood may be more expensive, but you should consider a real oak, ash, or pine dressing table to be an investment. If you look after it it is unlikely to depreciate in value and could even be passed onto your children as an heirloom.

The choice of wood is of course a very personal one and will boil down to your own taste at the end of the day, as is the decision to go with painted or unpainted. If you are after a more contemporary style then painted is probably the choice for you, and a black or white dressing table might be in order.. But if you want a more traditional finish then you will find that there are any number of wax finishes to protect it and prolong its life.

You will also, of course need a dressing table stool and mirror to complete the setup. You can either buy a matching set, or find the pieces separately. As lighting is important here, you may want to get a dressing table mirror with lights built into it, or use wall sconces on either side and a lighted magnifying mirror on the tabletop.

Brown Leather Sofa – The Different Styles and Uses

There is something that is just so stately about a brown leather sofa. One reason could be because they are almost always featured in movies as part of a big library or as a formal living room due to their sophistication and class.

They have never gone out of style and seem to fit in nicely with most home décor. There durability is also a big selling point.

Where to Put a Brown Leather Sofa

There are so many different types of uses for this particular sofa that far outnumber other sofas made from different material. Leather offers a degree of permanence that other furniture simply does not offer. These types of sofas are perfect for families with children or pets or both. They can be cleaned and may actually hold up quite well to rough housing by pets and children.

The placement of a sofa is not limited to just the living room or family room or den anymore. Of course, it is still widely favored to place your sofa in traditional rooms of the house.

A brown leather sofa is perfectly placed in front of a fireplace. It is also perfect in a formal living room or a den.

Styles

There are many styles to choose from. One such style are the tufted models, which are quite formal looking. Another is overstuffed models that are very comfortable. There is a style for every decor and every taste.

A few of the models that are tufted are “easy on the eyes” and well-designed – these will do best in a masculine room. The overstuffed models are great for a den or family room due to their size and comfortability.

A brown leather sofa can come in many different shades of brown, you are not limited to one specific type of brown. You can easily match your sofa to existing furniture or make your sofa the focal point of the room and work to match other furnishings to it. A great way to add a little splash to a brown leather sofa is to use throw pillows that are in accent colors, or even an afghan thrown casually across the back of the sofa can also add a little color and tie the rest of your furnishings in nicely.

Purchasing

You can purchase this type of sofa from a wide variety of furniture dealers. The prices will vary and will depend largely on the style of the sofa, the manufacturer of the sofa and the grade of the leather of the sofa. You can expect to spend anywhere from five hundred dollars to ten thousand dollars. If you are getting a complete brown leather lounge set, you can expect to pay more, although it will definitely cost less than if you purchased each piece separately.

Childrens Playhouse Sets: Finding the Right One

There are so many different kinds of childrens playhouse sets that the choices can often be overwhelming. There are indoor sets and outdoor sets—and all made from different materials, sizes and colors. There are sets for older as well as younger children, from kitchen sets, jungle gyms and forts, and even a combination of swings, slides, and climbing areas.

Some are so big that it can take more than a day to put together. When it comes to finding a set for your kids, the sky is the limit.

When you are looking for child’s playsets, the first thing your really have to do is sit down and think about how old your kids are, whether you want an indoor or outdoor set, and what kinds of activities get them excited.

Indoor sets provide many different choices, from arts and crafts tables, climbing and crawling, and rocking swings, just to name a few. There are activity centers, from kitchen sets to lemonade stands, to workshops. These stimulate the imagination with the accessories that are included.

Many sets of all kinds are constructed of heavy duty plastic, with rounded edges. This leaves less chance of injury, and the hard plastic is a breeze to clean. Many are expandable as well, especially the climbing and crawling models.   These have the capability to be expanded upon, allowing them to change and grow as your child does, which is great because of how fast kids grow these days.

It’s nice not having to replace the whole set every few years.

Others are made from wood, which can be much more durable,  and some combine the two different materials together. There are even models shaped and designed to look like wood but much lighter and cheaper—though they may suffer in durability and strength.

Often, you will need to assemble everything yourself, so you need basic tools like screw drivers and wrenches. Most don’t use nails anymore as they are too unreliable and don’t stay secure very long. Today’s sets come with bracketed fittings, color coded assembly instructions, and, if there are any special fasteners, come with the tools needed for those as well.

There are plenty of safety considerations you need to think about when purchasing kids playsets, and they should be discussed with your salesperson. Make sure the equipment is age appropriate and doesn’t have a lot of small parts younger kids may choke on. Make sure that any climbing equipment doesn’t have rough edges, and that rails are under two inches apart, so your kid’s head or limbs don’t get stuck.

Finally, and especially If there is assembly involved, you need to check the equipment on a regular basis, to make sure everything is securely fastened, and that any pieces aren’t broken, or have too much wear and tear.  Maintenance is a real necessity, no matter which model you buy, but some may need more than others, so be sure to discuss that as well.

And have a blast—I know your kids will.

Three Steps to Buying the Right Hall Table

When decorating the front entrance of a home, it’s essential to choose the right furnishings and accessories for the space. The entryway of a home is it’s “Hello” to anyone walking through the door. It’s either a welcoming and inviting space or an empty, cold space or a cluttered, messy one. The correct sized furniture that’s placed in the perfect spot and accessorized appropriately will enhance not only the entryway but the entire appeal of the home. The four main ingredients of the entryway are a fabulous area rug, a hall table, wall art and lighting.

The rug should be viewed as an anchor or base for the space. A bold graphic or a pretty pattern depending on the homeowner’s personal tastes will help to bring the eye downward. This downward glance will then be cast upward to the mid-view piece which is the hall table. From there the eye will travel upward to the artwork. The lighting might be just above the artwork or a fabulous chandelier, pendant or a flush mount ceiling light.

When choosing these pieces the most important consideration is measurement. Size and proportion are ultra crucial. The rug should be proportioned so that the floor below extends further on all sides – especially if the flooring is fabulous. The hall table should be substantial in the space but not oversized. If it’s too wide, it can hinder the path of incoming guests. If it’s too small, then it’ll simply get swallowed up by the space and won’t have the desired effect. The artwork can be in the form of an actual painting or a stunning mirror or a hanging sculptural type of artwork.

Once the size of the hall table is determined, it is then time to decide which features you’d like it to have or actually need for it to have. Many hall tables are quite simply legs with a flat surface top. If this open, airy type of table is what you desire then simply choose the materials you prefer such as oak, pine, metal, painted wood, glass, marble, granite or a combination of materials. If you’d prefer storage or perhaps a bottom shelf for decorative purposes there are many versions available such as hall tables with drawers or cabinetry or a combination of both.

Now that you’ve settled on the size, materials and features you’d like your hall table to possess, it’s time to begin shopping. Start your shopping online where you’ll find the greatest variety to choose from as well as the best deals.

Divan Beds: Embrace Comfort and Functionality

Divan beds are extraordinary furniture. Combining the functionality of a storage unit, seating area, and sleeping area into one piece of furniture makes them a popular choice among bed buyers. They can fit into any style of decor, any room which typically houses a bed or a seating area, and any budget. They also come in many different sizes. A double divan bed is perfect if you’d like that extra storage space but want the comfortable size of a typical double bed.

A double divan bed is a great bed for any bedroom. Like all divan beds, the double divan bed comes with drawers built into the frame underneath the mattress. Typically it has two drawers, but if you have your double divan bed made to custom-order you can add more. Sometimes pre-made models also have more than two drawers. This added storage space gives it a lot of functionality.

In a child’s room, the underneath storage area can be used for toys, clothing, school supplies or other personal items. A divan bed is sturdy and built to last. This bed can grow with your child, through their teen years, and they can bring it with them when they go off to college, where no doubt they will find the extra storage particularly useful. When they are done using it, you can bring it back and furnish your guest room.

The guest room is a great place for either a single or a double divan bed. The drawers underneath gives you space to neatly store your things, and the double bed gives your guests a fantastic night’s sleep every time they come to visit.

A double divan bed is also the perfect option for a smaller bedroom, a single person’s bedroom, or for a couple that likes to sleep close together at night. The storage space gives you a place to put off season clothes and bed linens, and the mattress is as comfortable as a traditional bed.

So if you’re looking for a new bed and want the added kick of extra storage, a divan bed could be the perfect option.

The Rustic Beauty of a Farmhouse Kitchen Table

The rustic beauty and craftsmanship of antique farmhouse tables has been regaining popularity with the buying public in recent years. Generations ago, a farmhouse kitchen table was often located in the middle of a large kitchen which served as the primary gathering place for members of farming families. A mixture of chairs and benches often served to seat many people for meals. The table and seats would have been crafted from whatever hardwood was available in that particular area at the time. Many people picture these tables as being rectangular in shape and very long but they could also be found in other shapes like circles and squares. In fact, they often pulled double duty as a work area or desk. The usual construction was a series of long wooden planks affixed on top of legs attached to the long edge. The legs would often be hand carved with various designs that can also be found on the earliest tables that originally came from France. These furniture pieces were made to enhance whatever environment they were found in.

The adults would gather together in the kitchen to discuss serious matters. Children would spend daylight hours working the farm and then sit there after dark to attend to school work. The table was easily the hub of life at home and it may be that mystique that makes them so popular today. Life may be much more complicated now than it was then but having a place for a family and friends to gather offers an opportunity to share experiences and converse with one another about their lives.

It may be somewhat difficult to find an authentic farmhouse table at an affordable price these days. Those you do find will likely be quite expensive. There are modern replicas available that are priced according to the skill and time spent by the carpenter who built it as well as the wood used in its construction. Once you add in a reasonable price to deliver such a bulky and heavy table, you can easily see why purchasing a farmhouse kitchen table can require quite a large monetary investment on your part. Before you spend your money, consider the various options and compare prices until you find the table that is right for you.

Making A Mosaic Make Up Vanity

A make up vanity table is a woman’s private place, where she can start the day relaxing as she gets herself made up and lets her natural beauty shine. It’s a place where you let your personality come out, so why not have one that really reflects your individuality and your unique tastes?

The problem with most make up vanity furniture is that they’re mass produced, thus they have no ‘soul’. To have a truly unique looking vanity you need slightly more than just a good one from your local store. There are gorgeous make up vanity sets that can be used while applying your make-up, but to have that extra touch in this piece of furniture, you need to go a bit further. Why not let your creativity and artistic talents come out by decorating your vanity with mosaic tiles?

You’ll find that you can purchase mosaic make up vanity tables online, but they all have their issues. First of all, they’re as expensive as solid gold, and they’re not available everywhere. They also come in only in a select number designs, which is not something you’re likely to accept if you take pride in being a creative person. Sometimes you need to do things on your own if you want to get them done properly, so the best thing is to just do it yourself.

Fortunately, a mosaic makeup vanity can be made at home and is fairly easy project even if you’ve never done such a thing before. You’ll have a piece of furniture that is just what you wanted; one that is beautiful, one-of-a-kind, and a work of art you’ll be proud to show off.

make up vanityIt’s easy to find the materials needed to get the results you want. Try to pick a white make up vanity set so that you don’t ruin a hardwood surface if everything goes wrong. They also cost a little less than the other types. You also need something you can use as tiles. Old tinted glasses, plates you don’t mind breaking work well, but you can purchase geometric shaped ceramic tiles in any hardware store. Make up vanities look good with a colorful mix of tiles, but you can use one single tone as well. You can create intricate designs with the tiles for a more sophisticated look. You can get stencils for these if you’d like, or just go freehand.

Besides the tiles, you also need to have some adhesive, which will be used to keep the tiles in place until you add the grout. Grout is a material used to hold bricks or tiles together. It comes in black, white, beige, and other colors, so make a choice that compliments the tiles and design you have in mind. It’s also used to seal the hole between elements, like your pieces of mosaic.

Get the tiles you want to use. Break the glasses and plates in a padded bag. Always wear safety gloves and goggles to protect yourself from the little shrapnel that can cut the bag from inside. Pick the flattest pieces as they work the best on any flat surface. Think about a design you can live with, and arrange the little pieces so that they compose an aesthetically pleasing formation. You may want to make your design out of bought geometric tiles that are clean cut and use the irregular broken ones as a border.

When you’re satisfied with the result, glue the pieces to the clean surface, and wait until the adhesive starts to do its job. Mix the grout with some water, and fill the gaps between the edges. Don’t care if it gets on the tiles just yet, you can even smear it in a 1/2 inch thick layer so that it covers everything. The most important thing is to fill the holes.

Once it’s dried, which would happen in ten to twelve hours, you can use a wet sponge to clean the surface. Use a hard, dense one that can tear off the excess dried grout easily. Make sure that the surface is clean and there are no white spots left on the tiles. You can apply a layer of lacquer to protect it from metal objects, scratches and dents. An alternative is to have a piece of glass cut to fit the top of your vanity, giving you a smooth surface to work on, and protecting your work from damage.

It’s that simple, and it doesn’t need to be applied to an expensive antique make up vanity either. Mosaics do look good on intricately crafted old furniture, but the price of those pieces is usually too high to modify them in any way. Have fun, come up with a design that you think would be an asset to your room, and you’ll have a stunning vanity that will be a real personal oasis that you can enjoy starting your day with for years to come.

A Black Leather Chair Is Chic

Although they have always been a popular style and choice, it seems that even more than ever before, people are making the decision to go ahead with the purchase of a black leather chair. Certainly, one reason could be the continuous improvements in the process that has made the leather used today even more attractive to its owners due to a softer and smoother feel to it. Particularly impressive is the use of any one of various styles of black leather dining chairs available as part of a formal dining room set that truly sends a message of class and distinction. In most cases these chairs sit on a solid wood base and offer a comfortable well padded leather seat and depending on the particular model perhaps a padded backrest as well. Another embellishment sometimes seen is the inclusion of attractive brass studs around the outside area of the seat and backrest. This touch can lend its own character and charm to the presentation being offered.

Of course these attractive black leather style chairs are certainly not limited to being seen only in the dining room, but are often on display in other rooms of the home in various guises. Among some of the more popular styles are the well-padded, comfortable club chairs and the truly delightful overstuffed luxurious recliner chairs. Black leather lounge chairs complete the picture. Some of these also provide ability to rock gently while reclined in the chair. Can anyone imagine anything more relaxing than being in one’s family room and simply taking in this whole process designed to be a source of total comfort?

Another model that simply never goes out of style is any of the black leather type office chairs available, from the more basic styles that are set on a rolling base and usually have a high back to them, to the executive ones that are even wider and plusher, often with heavily padded, thick armrests attached. In most situations where these particular executive chairs are found, one will also often see similar black leather chairs of a much smaller size, designed for visitors and clients to sit in. Together, they make a classic and professional appearing team.

People should always be aware that along with any of the different types and styles of chairs discussed, there is also a choice of a whole series of sofas and love seats designed to work in conjunction with each other. Also, in addition to the black leather items spoken about, potential users have the option of considering alternative colors such as tan, beige, brown, burgundy or cream color just for some.

Whatever the final choice decided upon, you can be assured that the leather furniture items chosen will be regarded as classy and elegant selections for your home or office.

Shopping for an Oak China Cabinet

The market is full of oak china display cabinets to consider but you will need to carefully consider a few characteristics before you buy.  To begin with, you want to consider the size carefully because a cabinet that is too large will appear bare if you don’t have enough items to display.  On the other hand, a cabinet that is too small will appear cluttered if you fill it with too much stuff.  Once you decide on the right size, you can then begin to narrow down the options in style or design.  Some oak china cabinet units contain shelves that are covered with glass doors while others offer a combination of open and closed shelving, cabinetry, and even drawers for storage.  It is a good idea to take inventory of the items you wish to store in the unit before you begin making style considerations.

The color or finish of an oak china display cabinet will also require a bit of considering on your part.  You will want a stain or paint color that is consistent with other furniture pieces in the room.  For example, if your dining room furniture set, which typically includes the dining table and chairs, contain a dark oak stain then you should definitely try to find a cabinet that is similar in appearance.  You may also want to consider a corner china cabinet because corners are hard to fill and in most case, the space goes to waste when not utilized.   Corner china cabinets also work best in small dining room where more room for maneuvering is welcome.

You can find an oak china display cabinet in just about any furniture store or online.   Corner units are bit more unique and may require a little more research time to find especially if you are looking for a local store that carries it.  When shopping online, it is definitely in your best interest to search for stores that are currently offering free shipping for their products.  This will enable you to shop around for the best prices and products without having to worry about exponential shipping costs.  You should always read the customer comments or reviews and more importantly, all of the product details prior to purchase.  Online shopping is risky but you can greatly reduce the chances of being disappointed with your purchase by taking your time to see what is available and narrowing down the choices carefully.

High Style In A Console Table

Decorative furniture is always fun to buy. Especially when it is not actually essential to your living space, but you are merely looking to fill an empty wall or create some decorative surfaces, your creative options begin to broaden. One piece you might really love is a mirrored console table.

Console tables are usually long and narrow tables constructed to be affixed to or set against a wall. They are most commonly found as decorative pieces in the living room, dining room, or entrance hall. As with all furniture, today you can find them in dozens of styles. The piece to perfectly suit your home décor is definitely out there. You just have to do the search. The first thing you might consider is if you’re looking for a more modern console table (straight, sleek lines and minimalist appearance) or something more antique (curved and decorative legs, delicate engravings). Of course, an antique console table does not actually have to be antique. Most of us are not looking to invest that kind of money. It merely refers to the style and build of the console.

console tableWhatever era you decide draw your console from, color is going to be a major factor. The tables can be built from virtually any material; various wood finishes, metal, glass, wicker. A black console table will require furniture and décor to support it. That means deep, dark, bold colors, or a “theme” or black and white contrast. A white console table, however, makes less of a statement and can often fall into the background of many color schemes. Wood finishes should match other pieces in your space, rather than clash. For example, an oak console table will work best with oak or pine, not mahogany. In an entryway, where there is usually very little furniture around, you’ll have much more leeway. For that reason, the hall console table can take any form or color.

There are two interesting styles I’d like to bring up. One is the half moon console table. I already mentioned that most consoles are long and narrow; meaning rectangular. So the half moon really is a step out of the box. The shape is very elegant, however. In a room that has many sharp edges, a half moon can bring a necessary softness to the atmosphere. The second is the mission style. A mission console table looks neither modern nor antique. It has a very craftsy, rough edge feel to its wooden construct. Many people love the mission style, but it is appropriate only among certain furniture styles.

Whether you choose a classic wall console or a mission style sofa console table, the fun of decorating does not end there. Consoles are built for laying out your decorative pieces. Flower arrangements, dishes, photographs, anything you’d like on an open display. The mirror behind your console will only add to the charm. Only, don’t overcrowd the tabletop. One, two, or three lovely pieces will be enough to complete your design.

Sideboard Furniture: Why You Need More Than Just One

a guest post by Marianne Chapa

If you are in the market for a piece of sideboard furniture, you should think hard about whether it might just make sense for you to get two rather than one. Now you might ask, why would I need more than one sideboard when I can’t fit more than that in my dining room? Well, the answer lies in the many other uses for this furniture there are besides in the dining room.

If you look around the homes of family and friends, you just might notice that a popular trend is to use things for uses other than those for which they were originally intended. This is true of other types of furniture, but it is especially true of sideboards. The reason is because this class of furniture offers many different storage configurations along with the fact that it is usually very stylish.

So what else can you do with sideboards? Have you thought about using one for a television stand in your living room? If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. After all the height is perfect for the large screen televisions that most people seem to have these days. The fact that this furniture has internal storage that can hold your cable and dvd boxes as well as all those dvds you own makes it seem like a perfect choice. Have you ever been to a home that is laid out in a very stylish manner, except you can see cable television wires and power cords running down the walls? Sideboards can fix all that.

The next biggest use for this furniture is in place of a hall table. This only works well in a home with good sized hallways. If you place the sideboard halfway down the hall, and mount a mirror on the wall above it, you have created a perfect little stopping off station when coming to and from the main entertaining areas of the home. The sideboard itself is a perfect place to store anything from extra linens to any small items that just seem to always be laying around.

As you can see, this kind of furniture can be used in a lot of different ways. If you have a storage need in any room, but you need for it to be good looking storage, think about a sideboard to fill the need and you almost cannot go wrong.

Single Divan Beds, Folding Beds, and More

a guest post by Anthony Brill

If you are looking to buy a bed then you will probably want the right kind of bedding to go with it. If you are furnishing a large apartment or a family house, then you may be looking for several different types of beds. Anyone who lives in a small apartment may want to look at single divan beds.

People buy folding beds for all kinds of reasons, largely because they want to save space. If you live in a small apartment or you only have one actual bedroom, then a folding bed is ideal. You can buy beds that fold up into the wall, or one where the mattress folds up and the headboard becomes a table top, if you buy the second type then you may want to have a curtain round the front of it when it is not in use.

When you live in a house with large sized rooms then you might want to throw caution to the winds and invest in a French bed. This type of bed will actually take up most of the room so don’t expect to have a lot of space for storage etc. This type of bed is generally low and may have high walls on either side, they are generally made from white colored wood and give a room an air of royalty.

If you would like to continue the royal theme throughout your home then you may want to buy a princess bed for a little girl’s room. This style of bed often comes with a canopy and can be obtained in pink to make a bed that really is fit for a king and queen’s daughter. You will need to buy sheets and duvets in sizes that are designed to fit the bedroom furniture you have bought, and for a large item this can be rather expensive.

Purchase A Leather Sofa Without Fear

a guest post by Jesse Digiovanni

In recent years, leather sofas have gained in popularity to a very great degree. Traditionally leather sofas were only an option for the very well off. Simply owning a leather sofa implied an elite status. There has been a significant drop in the price of leather sofas in recent years tough and today these once out of range furniture items are well within the budget of many furniture buyers.

As the prices of leather sofas have dropped manufacturers have taken proactive steps to increase sales. These proactive measures include designing more comfort features and many new styles to choose from. You can find style ranging from high back to low back and even a form of sofa with no back often referred to as the fainting sofa. Corner sofas have also become a very popular option due to their ability to seat large groups of people and also in part due to the flexibility in terms of how the pieces are arranged.

Owning a leather sofa is a one luxury that may actually be a wise and practical investment choice. This is due to the fact that leather sofas tend to last far longer than fabric covered sofas and also tend to improve with age. Leather sofas will resist rips and tears far better than a fabric covered sofa due to the superior strength of the leather. Leather will offer support and hold its shape far better than fabric.

One major benefit of a leather lounge is that if you spill a liquid on your leather sofa the liquid will tend to run off the surface of the leather. Simply grab a rag and wipe down the area and you will have a dry seat in minutes. By contrast the liquid will soak right in to fabric and you will have to do your very best to absorb the liquid out of the sofa. Even after trying to get as much liquid as you can out of the fabric you are still going to have a wet seat for a few hours and a very real possibility of a stain.

One other often overlooked benefit of a brown leather sofa is resale value. Most time when you buy a new sofa you would toss your old sofa or sell it for a few dollars. With a leather sofa though, provided you have taken reasonable care of it, you will be able to recoup a significant portion of the initial value.

Take all these things together and you are left with the obvious fact that leather sofas are a great choice for your next furniture purchase.

Corner Sofas Make Your Home Look Bigger

a guest post by Kenneth Alden

In the furniture market today, corner sofas offer you an endless variety of options. There are times a distributor will want to move a particular item of furniture and the salesperson may try to use their sales training to lead you in the direction of an item that does not really meet your requirements. Keep your requirements in mind when making your decision because this sofa is going to be with you for a long time. You want to make sure that it fits well into your home and meets all of your seating needs. Be sure that you know the overall measurements of the room the sofa is going to occupy as well as what your normal seating needs are and factor that into what type of budget you have for this purchase when you step out the door to go to the furniture showroom. Helping you prepare for these questions is the purpose of this article.

When you get to the showroom keep in mind that this is a very large building and even a large corner sofa will of course look small in this environment. So when you see a small corner sofa in the superstore you may believe that this sofa is way too small to meet your needs. Test the sofa, sit on it, count the number of people that you think would reasonably fit onto the sofa and decide whether or not it actually can meet the needs that you have. Small sofas are going to appear very tiny on the furniture showroom floor but you don’t live in a furniture showroom so that piece of furniture is going to appear bigger in your home than it does at that store.

If your new corner sofa is intended for a large room then there is no problem with buying a large corner sofa. This might even be the preferred choice if you need to use the sofa in such a manner that it sections off an area of the room to give it a more intimate setting. However if you are looking at corner sofas with the idea of putting it into a small room then a large corner sofa is going to be out of the question. You would need to get a small corner sofa if you intend to place it so that it opposes a corner and makes the room, squared off. If you place a small corner sofa so that it’s actually in a corner that will really increase the usable space of your room while still giving you plenty of seating area.

When it comes to your budget for buying this corner sofa keep in mind that you’re going to have this piece of furniture for a very long time so don’t let sticker shock set in. This is one purchase that I recommend you not let the sticker price be the determining factor in the buying decision. I recommend purchasing the best piece of furniture that you can afford without breaking the bank. While you might not be able to afford an exclusive leather lounge suite, you do deserve a quality sofa that will serve you well for years. Do take advantage of the no interest payment plans that these places offer it you are in a stable employment situation. Buying a corner sofa can be a great experience if you keep in mind the things outlined in the article.

Deciding On A Compact Computer Desk

a guest post by Roxie Blauvelt

Whether you work from home full time or simply take work home from time to time, it is important to have a space where you can focus on the task at hand. Unfortunately, your house is probably already crowded. Finding a place to keep a computer desk might be a challenge. When you buy a compact computer desk, however, you can have a workspace that does not take up too much space in your home.

Most compact desks are small enough to fit into a corner. If you have a traditional personal computer, the tower will go on a lower shelf and the monitor will sit on the desk’s top. If you have a laptop, you can get an even smaller desk because you will not have to worry about having a place to store a central processing unit.

Computer desks can be affordable, especially if you assemble them yourself. There are plenty of easy to assemble computer desks available. Make sure you check the dimensions before you make a purchase. If the store does not have a model unit assembled, it can be difficult to determine exactly how big the desk will be once it is put together. You do not want to buy a desk and put it together and then find out that it is too big to fit into its designated spot. Take careful measurements, write them down, and take those measurements to the store.

If you do not have a special space where you can set up a computer desk permanently, look for a computer desk that can fold flat. If you cannot find a computer desk that folds, look for an adjustable table. As long as you can adjust the height so that you can you can type comfortably, nearly any table can be used as a computer desk.

Although you will probably need to get the approval of your manager or supervisor first, switching to a smaller desk at work can give you a lot more room. When you have more room to work your brain feels less cluttered and more organized. The room you save by switching to a smaller desk can be used for bookcases or filing cabinets. Any desk that you use in your home can easily be used in an office environment.

If you are really pressed for space and you use a laptop, consider using a dinner tray as a desk. You can also purchase a padded lap desk. Even if you have room for a traditional desk, a lap desk can be great to have on hand if you ever need to travel for business. Even if your hotel room has a black computer desk, it is not likely to be a comfortable one. When you have a little desk that fits nicely on your lap, you can relax on your hotel bed while you take care of business.

Whether you need a compact computer desk for home, work, or travel, there are plenty of options that will allow you to use your computer comfortably.

A Corner Audio Tower Just Make Sense

a guest post by Guy Pahl

Have you recently installed a home theater or decided to upgrade your existing one? If so, then you may want to pay close attention to the following article. A large part of setting up a home theater or music room is paying close attention to the type of furniture you select. Though most people think of furniture purely for aesthetic purposes, there are some other reasons to take your time in choosing the right pieces for your home. This is particularly true when selecting furniture for a specific application, which in this case involves audio/video. There are advantages to selecting a quality audio tower including the ability to safely house your components. Buying a high quality piece also assures you that you will have it for many years to come.

audio towerIn looking specifically at audio towers, there are a few different types to choose from depending on the size of your space, your budget and the number of components you own. If you happen to be limited when it comes to your available space, the best option many be to purchase a corner audio tower. Unlike traditional towers that are meant to be installed along a flat wall, these towers are designed to take up a corner in your home. This can be useful for people that have already used up the flat sections of their room, or for those that simply want to spread out their furniture a bit.

Fortunately, buying a quality corner audio tower is fairly straightforward by simply heading online and searching through retailers that cater to this type of application. Purchasing through a high-end retailer is surefire way to guarantee that what you’re buying is intended for audio/video applications. For example, you may want to buy a Bush audio tower. They have a wide variety of towers in different styles and sizes, so you’ll be sure to find one that fits into your home in terms of both space and decor. And judging from the number of satisfied customers they have, it definitely seems like a safe bet. You can also take advantage of units that feature integrated power and cable management systems.

Alternatively, you can also search for audio cabinets by heading to a high-end furniture retailer like Ethan Allen. Though you may end up paying quite a bit more for a quality piece of furniture on the front end, you won’t have to worry about replacing it a couple years down the road.

General Facts About An Outdoor Gas Fireplace

a guest post by Justin Coon

Who doesn’t love to have a beautiful and functional outdoor gas fireplace in their garden or patio? This kind of fireplace is a popular choice among many homeowners due to their undeniable functionality, trendy appeal, and safety. Instead of burning wood on your lot why not install a gas outdoor fireplace that you can conveniently use anytime you want. Most often than not, outdoor fireplaces are sold in unique styles, designs, sizes, features, and specifications.

Choosing a gas outdoor fireplace over the wooden variety will give you plenty of advantages. For one, there is no need to burn wood to produce fire. A gas fireplace is capable of providing immediate fire. Moreover, advanced fireplace models can create fire by just twisting a valve or flipping a switch. There is no need to worry about ashes, smokes, drafts, and sparks since wood is not used. However, since natural gas is not a renewable source, do not expect that it will come cheap. Though gas might be a bit expensive, they produce a cleaner burn as compared to wood. Another downside of a gas outdoor fireplace is that it lacks authenticity. It fails to create real-looking flames even if faux-wood inserts are used. But even though this kind of outdoor fireplace has its own set of ups and downs, adding one in your outdoor garden will surely be a wise decision.

With their presence, you and your family can always enjoy a relaxing evening at the comforts of your backyard while still being kept warm. As the demand for gas outdoor fireplaces increases, the models available continue to grow. Today, this kind of outdoor fireplaces can now be constructed from varying materials including clay, cast iron, cast aluminum, steel, and clay. They are also available in different types. You can opt to buy either a built-in or portable gas outdoor fireplace.

If you plan to invest in a propane gas fireplace, you have to take note of the area of installation, your heating requirements, the features included, and your allotted budget.

What Exactly is a Leather Settee?

a guest post by Ettie Magin

A leather settee is a kind of a cross between a leather tub chair and a sofa. This piece is typically meant for only one person, but variations exist allowing two or three people to be seated comfortably. There are some distinctive features that separate this style of furniture from a sofa.

The back of most leather settees will be higher than that of a chair or couch. It also has armrests. It differs from a sofa in that it is meant for sitting rather than for reclining. In essence, the settee is a more formal piece of furniture. It can also be referred to as a Chesterfield sofa. They work wonderfully in the front of a home or in a living room. Settees that are not made with leather may also be found on the porch or in the yard. Some people even use it for extra seating at the dining room table.

Leather SetteeSettees can be made of several materials including wood or metal. However, upholstered furniture has a more sophisticated look and choosing a leather one will provide elegance to any home. These sofas were first manufactured in the last decade of the 19th century and were very popular through the early 20th century as well. The settee is now making a comeback. Some people like them for their older look. Others like them for their elegance and functionality. Whatever the reason, they are a popular addition to any leather lounge set.

Not all types of leather settee have an older look. There are more contemporary looks available and the collection is growing. Though typically straight backed and uncomfortable, people are now putting down cushions on older settees. They are also raising the backs of settees.

A leather settee is a way to give one’s living room a classic look with a modern feel. A person might enjoy having a settee meant just for one or might find a more modern version that seats two or three people. All of those options provide a cozy seating area with a clean look.

Some popular colors for settees are brown, black, and white, Perhaps the most popular of these is the brown leather settee, as it lends a classic sort of elegance to the room. On the other hand, a white leather settee will give a room a very modern and chic look. It’s amazing what the difference in color can do.

Though they have gone in and out of style since their inception during the 1890s, the settee is regaining popularity. This style is also often chosen for its flexibility since it can be used in several locations. A leather settee can add to the decor in a living room or serve as extra seating at the table.

Considering DVD Storage Cabinets

a guest post by Dean Schoonmaker

DVD storage cabinets are highly useful, but often overlooked items. Think about it. Do you have stacks of CDs and DVDs sitting next to your DVD player?  Maybe you just have a cardboard box that you store all of your movies in.  Have you ever had trouble finding the case to that movie you just watched?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, maybe you should consider buying a DVD storage cabinet.  With so many options, here are some key tips to finding one that is just right for you.

  • Most important is to figure out how many DVDs, CDs, and VHS tapes you own and then how many you are planning to hold in a DVD cabinet.  Plan to purchase a unit that is double the size that you need today.  This will give you ample room to organize your various movies and music discs, but also have space for future growth.  DVD stands can be purchased for as little as 10 DVDs all the way to over 1500 DVDs on one DVD shelf unit.
  • Decide where this unit will be placed; both which room and where in the room.  Measure the amount of space you will be dedicating to the cabinet to insure you do not buy something that wont fit.
  • DVD Storage Cabinets

  • What is the decor of the room that you are going to put the DVD storage cabinet into?  Is all the other furniture wood?  Maybe an oak DVD cabinet would fit well.  If there does not seem to be a perfect fit, consider a glass or black cabinet as those can typically fit into any room decor.
  • Think about the other features you may want or need in a cabinet.  Does your CD DVD storage cabinet need to have locking doors to keep children out?  Do you want movable shelves so you can change the layout as your collection evolves?  How about a light in the cabinet to see what you are searching for?

Thinking about all these different features and options will help you make the best decision you can when you purchase your DVD media storage cabinet.
