Rule #1. Kids change their minds very often. Every time the Cartoon Channel changes their featured cartoon series, there will be new advertisements and merchandising. Every season, your child will have a new cartoon hero or heroine and will not only want new toys, but will want his or her bedroom redecorated. It is also easy to stick decals of various cartoons on, and reasonably easy to remove the decals when they are no longer wanted.

Rule #2. Make sure you buy kids bedroom furniture that is slightly over-sized. Remember that your child is growing. Depending on his or her age, a growth spurt could add as much one foot of height in just a year. Make sure the bed you buy is long enough to cater for two or three years worth of growth unless you want to buy your child a new bed every year. The wardrobe should also be over-sized. After all, your child’s clothes will also increase in both size and number, and the wardrobe will need to fit these in.

Rule #3. Make sure to add extra storage bins and overhead cupboards. The extra storage bins are for your child’s toys. Younger children should not have shelves in their bedrooms. After all, they may have an accident while climbing the shelf. Some of these occurrences are the parents’ fault. Too many parents have a habit of placing something their child wants to use on a shelf that is too high for him or her to reach, causing their child to climb the shelf. To avoid this sort of incident, stick to storage bins or chests that your child can always reach. The overhead cupboards should be installed high up the walls above the normal line of sight of your child. When your child is young, these cupboards are for you to use for extra storage. When your child grows older and taller, he or she can use them for extra storage.

Canopy Beds for Kids

Before the curtains, the canopy.  If your kid sleeps in a four-poster bed, then it’s canopy-ready.  But you can make your own canopy.  Get your carpenter to suspend a large wooden frame that’s the same size as the bed from the ceiling.  Hang it with hooks.  Get curtain rods for all four sides. Tie them on the frame with velvet or silk rope after you place curtains on the rods.

Another canopy assembly uses a hula-hoop suspended from the ceiling with a hook to keep it in place over the bed.  Let curtains of sheer soft fabric billow down from the hoop to the bed.

You may also extend the headboard up with two poles. Then construct a cantilevered frame hanging from them reaching across to above the footboard. That, however, requires some intense measuring, a little engineering and lightwood.  You can only hang light fabric from them.

Use light or heavy drapery or mix up the two. It would depend on the mood you’d like to create. Help your kid find textile prints that appeal to his interests.  Find interesting textured fabric. So what should you consider when shopping for dressing tables? Well first of all you will have to decide whether to go with the Single pedestal, double pedestal or console style dressing table. These are the three distinct styles around which all dressing tables are based. In an ideal world you should choose the double pedestal dressing table over the other two. However the world is rarely ideal and often space and cost will mean that the double pedestal dressing table is impractical. While they are without a doubt the most impressive style, they are usually the largest and most expensive option.

An ideal compromise then is the single pedestal dressing table, these are not as big as the double pedestal counterpart but with the single set of drawers or a cupboard down either the left or right hand side they should still offer enough storage space to accommodate all your cosmetic needs. The console table is the smallest of the 3 options and is more like a desk than a dressing table, with no side column it provides storage space via 2 or 3 drawers positioned along the length of the table top. This is the recommended choice where cost and space are at a premium.

Once you have decided on the style the next thing to consider should be the material. Do you want a solid wood dressing table? Pine, oak or ash are great materials for your dressing table and where possible you should consider this option over plywood and chipboard. Real wood may be more expensive, but you should consider a real oak, ash, or pine dressing table to be an investment. If you look after it it is unlikely to depreciate in value and could even be passed onto your children as an heirloom.

The choice of wood is of course a very personal one and will boil down to your own taste at the end of the day, as is the decision to go with painted or unpainted. If you are after a more contemporary style then painted is probably the choice for you, and a black or white dressing table might be in order.. But if you want a more traditional finish then you will find that there are any number of wax finishes to protect it and prolong its life.

You will also, of course need a dressing table stool and mirror to complete the setup. You can either buy a matching set, or find the pieces separately. As lighting is important here, you may want to get a dressing table mirror with lights built into it, or use wall sconces on either side and a lighted magnifying mirror on the tabletop.
